We arrived at Talladega Creekside Resort in Talladega, AL on 11/30/2005. The campground we were scheduled to stay at closed down, and they gave us the name of one we stayed at. We left on 12/09/2005 and header for Benchmark Coach RV Park in Marion, MS. This week makes two weeks of quiet and relaxing time.

Stockade Redan area of the battlefield

On 12/14/2005 we arrived at Askew Landing Campground in Edwards, MS. We visited Vicksburg National Military Park near Vicksburg, MS on 12/16/2005. This battlefield is the site of a Civil War Battlefield. The battle took place between May 18 to July 4, 1863 and the North won this battle. The picture was taken in the Stockade Redan area of the battlefield

MS Capitol South Side

We visited the MS Capitol on 12/18/2005.After years of public debate, Governor Andrew Houston Longino, who took office in January 1900, convinced the Legislature it was time to construct a new Capitol and was appointed chairman of the State House Commission in February 1900 by the Legislature.

Fourteen architects submitted plans in response to the architectural contest advertised though newspapers in five cities across the country.  Bernard Green, the engineer who designed the Library of Congress, was hired by the State House Commission to review the submissions; he chose the plan of Theodore C. Link of St. Louis, Missouri.

Erected on the site of the old State Penitentiary, the Capitol was completed within 28 months in 1903 at a cost of $1,093,641.  Most fortuitously, rather than issuing bonds as was planned, the cost of the Capitol was paid in full at completion after the State of Mississippi was awarded one million dollars in a lawsuit settlement ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court for back taxes owed by the Illinois Central Railroad.

MS Old Capitol

Also on 12/18/2005 we visited the old Capitol Museum which was closed because of Katrina and it is not open on weekends. The Old Capitol is Mississippi’s most historic building. Built in 1839, it was the site of some of the state’s most significant legislative actions, such as the passage of the 1839 Married Women’s Property Act, Mississippi’s secession from the Union in 1861, and the crafting of the 1868 and 1890 state constitutions.

Our trip on 12/28/2005 was to Rainbow End SKP-PK in Livingston, TX which is where our address is. We celebrated the New Year here in Livingston. Then on 01/04/2006, we arrived at TT Colorado River Resort in Columbus, TX. This was another relaxing week with no site seeing.

Alamo

On 01/11/2006, we arrived at Summit Vacation Resort in New Braunfels, TX. This town is between San Antonio, TX and Austin, TX. We visited The Alamo in San Antonio, TX on 01/14/2006. The Battle of the Alamo took place here and started on 02/23/1836 and ended 3/06/1836. For 13 days about 160 men held off 5,000 Mexican soldiers before being over run.

Texas Capitol South Side

Then on 01/15/2006, we drove to visit the TX Capitol in Austin, TX. The picture is of the South Side of the Capitol. This building is the fourth building to serve as the Capitol. It was constructed 1882 to 1888 On 01/18/2006, we drove to Las Aves RV Resort & Country Retreat in Medina, TX.

David Crocket Monument

We arrived at Circle Bar RV Park in Ozona, TX on 01/25/2006. This is a town of about 2,000 to 3,000 people and is in the eighth largest county in TX. The county is Crockett County and Ozona is the only town in the county. We visited the town center on 01/28/2006.

Fort Lancaster Soldier Quarters

We then drove the 40 miles out of town to Fort Lancaster State Historic Site which is still in Crockett County. The picture is of the Soldier’s Quarters. The fort was established in 1855 to guard the San Antonio–El Paso Road and to protect movement of supplies and immigrants coming to the area. The fort was abandoned March 19, 1861, after Texas seceded from the Union.
