Then on 06/21/2009 we visited Ocmulgee National Park in Macon, GA. The Ocmulgee Site had many cultures. Paleo-Indian (Pre 9000BC) were nomadic Indians who hunted large mammals. Archaic (9000 – 1000 BC) were hunters and gatherers. Woodland (1000 BC – 900 AD) were cultivating squash, gourds, beans, and corn. They began to live in villages at least part of the year. Early Mississippians (900 – 1100) originated in the Mississippi Valley and planted extensive crops and also lived in large villages. They built Mounds and Earth Lodges. Late Mississippians (1100 -1350) were a combination of two previous cultures and were called Lamar. Creek Indians (1690 -1715) built a large town here to take advantage of commerce with the British. The village was abandoned after the Indians were defeated by the colonists in the Yemassee War. The picture is of the Earth Lodge Mound.
